How Photography Techniques Builds Community

The problem that some people have with digital photos is that they think it is too much work to go from their digital camera to actually holding photos in their hand. With the old fashioned forms of photography, it was easy to just drop off your film and go back the next day and pick up your photos. Compared to all the options available with digital photography and the internet, I can see where people would find it easier.

But what happens to those photographs that you just picked up from the photo lab? Interestingly enough, most of them end up in a shoe box or a drawer somewhere.

My wife, who is an avid scrap booker, is appalled when she finds these stashes of photographs at the homes of friends and family. So much so that she goes on frequent “rescue missions” to get these photos out in the open.

Now with digital photography and just a tiny bit of effort and a lot less money than getting the equivalent number of photos developed from film, you can use the internet to take the photos straight from the camera to your friends and family.

My new favorite site for this is Flickr.com. I can upload my photos, divide them into sets based on what they are from and then invite my family and friends to view them. Even better though, I can encourage them to comment on the photographs. The comments give my wife a lot of ideas on how to journal them in her scrap books. If you check the right options, your friends can even order prints directly from the site so they don’t have to ask you to get them an extra print and wait for you to deliver. They just order it themselves (with their own money, nice!).

So reconsider photography techniques and the ability to share online before going back to a regular film camera.
